Authenticity in the blogging industry. A statement so layered, it may as well be an inception movie. Am I authentic and transparent enough? A question I often find myself asking the inner conscience when that little critter called self-doubt starts to creep into my overdrive of a mind. A question I often know the answer to, but so often form a biased conclusion based on what new "thing" I see on social media every day.

What does authenticity mean to you? For me, authenticity is transparency. It is a person finding common ground between being comfortable within themselves, without being arrogant. It is knowing who you are and not being afraid to be that person. It is also knowing who you are, but not always having the courage to shout this out loud from the rooftops. Authenticity is seeing the beauty within you. Authenticity is being yourself in every sense of the word. Speaking your truth - speaking a truth and creating a world so uniquely your own - ain't nobody can thrive in it but you.

I often find myself stuck in this never-ending game of self-doubt and this forces me to question my abilities and inner construct. I am who I am and there's absolutely nothing I can do to change that.

And unfortunately as hard as I try, I'll never be able to complete a rubik's cube in record breaking time. As hard as I might hope, I'll never be as good at Maths as I want to be. And as much as I wish I was, I'll JUST never be Becky with the good hair. And you know what, that's ok, because in being able to recognise that is what makes me authentic. Recognising my subjective beauty and accepting it. And although, I may not have those things, it's important for me not to forget what I am good at. Life is all about celebrating your achievements and the things you are good at. I feel as humans, we often limit the blowing of our own trumpet for fear of sounding like an arrogant tool. But recognising and celebrating the fact that you can stuff 20 marshmallows into your mouth or can read the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 2 days (oh yeah I did that!) is definitely something to write home about. Recognising what makes us who we are, can only ever benefit you in the long run, it is better for our wellbeing, health and happiness and in turn our authentic beauty.

I've seen far too many people lie about things on their Instagram or write about stuff on their blog, that they have no interest whatsoever in - and for what? For a few extra likes or chance to be in the same company of those in the big leagues.

Now don't get me wrong, I see things posted on instagram and yes I do take inspiration from them, there are some bloody creative people out there and they are forever inspiring and motivating me to push my creative boundaries. However in saying this... I am always myself.  Because I honestly don't know how to be anyone else. And trust me I've tried it before. I've tried the glitz and I've tried the glam. The pretty dresses, the long hair and the short skirts. I tried it all, in the hope that it would make me appear prettier, more worthy and in my warped, twisted mind, more authentically "Girl-ish". What EVEN is authentically girlish anyway? Who even defines the standards of beauty and feminity? Nobody but yourself, that's who. Beauty is subjective, it's what you make it and that I guess - (not to sound corny) is the beauty of it all.

I curate, create and carry out my blog and socials how I see fit. I could so very easily start posting photos of my avocado on toast or unicorn flavoured frappes (I think that's what it is now), but I don't, because it's just not me and to share something like that - would be to lie to the readership (no matter how big or small) I have worked so hard to achieve. I do not envy or critique the people who do this, by all means, post as many photos of your avo or unicorn themed things as you see fit, just ensure that you are doing it for you, for your authenticity and not for the social media blank space of the world.

Whatever you do on social media, remember to do it for yourself - because in the face of it all, when and if social media ever becomes a black hole filled space. Ask yourself this? What will you have left? A curated photo that got you a load of likes and comments reading #goals & #beaut, but is in no way a reflection of yourself? Or will you have a sense of pride that you were able to learn more about yourself and grow as a person in an authentic and original way?

I wrote this post in no way to lecture anybody about who they should and shouldn't be. In all honesty, it was more of a way to act as a reminder to myself. I often doubt myself and fall privy to peer pressure and influences of this beautiful and sometimes "perfect" world and will often find myself wondering 'Am I enough?' Writing a post like this helps me to remember that 'yeah...I am enough', it helps to keep me grounded and remember what it means to be authentic and to be myself. It reminds me that I am worthy and that although I often disbelieve it - am beautiful.

And if that means flipping a fedora atop my head and parading around like I've been plucked straight out of the 1920's prohibition era then so bloody well be it...that's authenticity for ya!
