Social Media: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

"And you're careful not to show it, it's like magic. But it's always been a smoke and mirrors game, anyone would do the same." - Gotye's 'Smoke and Mirrors'

I'm not a huge fan of social media, I'm not gonna lie to you guys. I actually used to hate it up until I started blogging! But you know as a blogger, your life is literally SOCIAL MEDIA all day ERRYDAY! So I had to learn to adapt and adjust. But it wasn't easy. I hate the idea that your life is literally broadcasted to the entire world in just one, fast click, I hate that so many Youtubers & bloggers are open to hate and abuse, because of social media. And I hate that social media is a gateway to all kinds of sex predators and other weird cringe-worthy human beings of the earth. While it has it's bad faults it also has it's good and I can't deny that since jumping on the social media bandwagon, my blog has grown in ways I never thought were possible. I remember when I first started blogging, I barely got more than about 30-40 views per week, now I'm getting probably triple that many views a day and more! The power of this tech phenomenon is crazy and like all things big, have their pros and their cons. So join me now as I tell you guys about the good, the bad, and the ugly of social media...

The Good:
- Helps to promote your blog: Now I'm sure you  bloggers know how helpful social media - and not just one platform, ALL social media platforms are in promoting your blog, a recent post and your YouTube channels! It spreads the word and brings in new readers or viewers, it get's people talking about your content and it helps your blog and channel to grow. When I first started I was oblivious to the traffic that could be gained from one single retweet or a simple hashtag, now I use them religiously and it has helped my blog to grow in so many ways!

- Gain inspiration: There is so much inspiration on social media, I mean just head over to Pinterest and you've got inspo, and goals everything, everywhere!! Everyone, and anyone can access social media, which can be a bad thing, but it is also one of the most positive things about it. By having anyone able to access it, we are able to be exposed to the vast and diverse range of creativity that exists, think how another person may think, and see all the wondrous things they may see. It is a vast haven of the world's eye and inspiration lurks at every corner!

The Bad:
- Addictive: So while it can do many good things, too much social media can quickly turn sour. It is easy to get addicted. It is so easy to start saying words with a hashtag prefix and it is so easy to spend all day with your eyes glued to your phone or computer screen, so much to the point where you become anti-social. At times when the SM starts to take control, take a step back and test yourself. Try to go 30 minutes without accessing any social media, if you can't do this, I think it's time to call the HIMYM cast for a social media intervention!

The Ugly:
- Meanies: Trolls, haters, jealous, evil, people with no lives - whatever you want to call them, they exist and are probably one of the ugliest things about social media, being a blogger and/or a Youtuber.

- Sexual predators:  These people are the scum of the social media and internet world (excuse my negative choice of word there, but they sicken me). These people prey on children, the old, and the vulnerable on the internet, manipulate and lure them for their own selfish desires. It makes me sick, and it is one of the reason's why social media is such a scary place to be. It is scary to think that a little girl of about 12 could post an innocent selfie of herself to her instagram feed, while someone completely unknown to her could be using it for their own selfish, sick desires.

So yeah, you've got the good, the bad and the ugly of social media, and the absolute crappiest of the crap, but even with the trolls and the haters. You just can't deny the power of social media, it's magnitude and the effect that it can have on people all over the world. We are living in an age where people are getting paid thousands of pound to post one picture of a product to their Instagram, that's crazy!! I don't know about you guys but if that can happen now in 2015, I am excited to see what can happen with social media in the next 5/10 years!

Did you like this post? What do you like most about social media? What do you dislike about it?

  1. Great post! I actually don't use any social media! Besides my personal Facebook. I don't have any for my blog though besides my blog itself. I already feel like I sometimes become addicted to just looking at blog after blog- i'm afraid what might happen if I start using other forms of SM like twitter!

  2. I absolutely agree! Wonderful article. I believe social media is excellent for the blog and is the only reason I have so many chunks of the internet but it, as you have exampled, has a very dark side.

I've sadly become used to sexual propositions, the people not caring that it is public but I recently encountered my first sector of "trolls". That was absolutely horrifying.

Here's to hoping social media will better itself one day! xx

  4. I love how social media can connect you to people you would never have met otherwise and also lets you get involved in discussions (like last night's discussion on feminism on twitter-where else?!)

I do like to complete disconnect though - sometimes it's nice just to take a breather.

    1. YES exactly! That's one of the things I love about it the most, there are just so many other people out there waiting to inspire and encourage you and social media allows this to happen! Yes me too, it's good to take a breather! :)

  5. Such a nice piece - love ow you can connect with others worldwide, but it can also have such a negative effect on young people at times with the idea of striving for perfection

    1. Yes, it's the younger generation I worry for the most, because they've never really knew a time when social media wasn't in their lives they now don't know how to be without it and that is sad! :( Thank you for commenting! :)

  7. Such a fab post lady, totally agree with everything too. Sometimes I wish I didn't need social media so much for my blog but alas, we know we all do. As bad as the mean sides can be though, I do love that you can make "virtual friends" and chat to people like minded!

    1. Yes exactly! I love that social media has allowed me to meet people who have similar likes and dislikes to me, many of which my personal friends don't have! It really is a powerful tool! :)
