Return to the Magic: 6 things we know about the new Harry Potter spin-off so far

Tuesday, 21 October 2014

Hi girls and boys and boys and girls, how are you all? I know it's been a while and I'm sorry! It's just ever since the start of the new year at Uni I have been thrust into a world of never-ending deadlines, countless coursework and disastrous attempts to start my dissertation (all of which are not yet complete btw!) But amongst it all, there was one headline which hit the world like a storm!(and nearly caused me to have a heart attack on the tube). It was the announcement and confirmation that there was going to be a new series of films relating to the Harry Potter series and it was something that all Harry Potter geeks have been hoping and praying for ever since the end of Deathly Hallows. It all began when J.K Rowling tweeted this riddle:

The riddle was solved and revealed to be 'Harry Returns! Won't say any details now. A week off. No comment'  And thus began a worldwind of further speculation as to what 'Harry returns' actually means. Would it be a prequel set in Godric's Hollow, following the lives of Lily and James Potter and their lives before and during the rise of Voldemort? or would it be a sequel, continuing where the epilogue of the Deathly Hallows left off, with Harry married to Ginny, three kids and working as a full-time Auror? The possibilities are endless and so exciting to think about, but to narrow it down for you, here's what we already know about the new series of Harry Potter movies:

1. It is not a sequel nor a prequel. It will not be set before the Harry Potter books nor will it be set after them. J.K Rowling says it is an extension and is set in the same magical world but is not a continuation of the lives of Harry Potter and friends (Awww *Sad Face*)

2.It is a spin off series, based on the popular Hogwarts textbook called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them. The book is written by the wizard Newt Scamander and  was adapted into a novella in 2001 by J.K Rowling for us Muggle folks.

3. The book will be split into a three part series, with the first film set to release in 2016, the second in 2018 and the final in 2020. (Such a long wait, but it will be worth it!)

4. David Yates expert HP director will return again to direct the entire triology, who I'm sure will use his excellence and creativity to create some spelltactular films!!

5. It will be set in 1920's New York, which seems like a lifetime away from the picturesque settings of Hogwarts in Britain, meaning that the castle will not have a lead role in the film's setting, but who's to say it won't make a cameo appearance in the films (I mean there really is no Magic without Hogwarts is there?)

6. and Finally: Newt Scamander is part of Hufflepuff house! Meaning we can already gather from his Hogwarts house what kind of characteristics and looks he might possess. (A certain Cedric Diggoryesque type of character calls to mind!)

J.K Rowling blessed me with complete and utter joy in my childhood life, at times when it felt like things weren't going so great I would find myself getting lost in the Wizarding world of Harry and friends. The world and the series still holds so much sentimental value to me and I am grateful that Rowling will continue to bring joy to my adult life with Fantastic beasts! I can't wait, can you? Bring on 2016!!

And if you can't wait (I sure know I can't) follow J.K Rowling on twitter for all the latest updates on the triology.
